Fr Kapaun Medal of Honor

Congressman Tiahrt's
office will be releasing the following today, May 26,
2010
Fr.
Kapaun Medal of Honor Moves Closer to Reality
WASHINGTON,
D.C.—Nearly six decades ago, Army Chaplain Father Emil Kapaun
heroically risked his life on numerous occasions saving hundreds of
American soldier’s lives before losing his own life as a prisoner of
war in Korea. According to the Secretary of the Army, Kapaun’s
heroic acts warrant the awarding of the Medal of Honor – the highest
military decoration awarded by the United States. U.S. Congressman
Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.) for years has petitioned the Army on behalf of
the Kapaun family to allow the award process to move
forward.
This
week that process got another boost thanks to Tiahrt’s
efforts.
Last
October, Tiahrt received
confirmation from
the Secretary of the Army that officials had determined Fr. Kapaun’s
acts did warrant the Medal of Honor. However, because of a
three-year statute of limitation for awarding the Medal of Honor
from the time the heroic acts were committed, Congress has to
authorize an exception allowing the decoration to be posthumously
awarded to Fr. Kapaun.
Tiahrt
announced this week that he has successfully inserted authorizing
language for the medal into the National Defense Authorization Act –
a bill that is currently moving through both chambers of Congress.
The House Appropriations Committee is scheduled to consider the bill
as early as Thursday evening.
The
Tiahrt authorizing language will waive the provisions of current law
that requires the Medal of Honor to be awarded “within three years
of the date of the act upon which the award is
based.”
“The
national honor and recognition earned by Fr. Kapaun for his heroism
is long overdue,” said Tiahrt. “We want the Kapaun family and the
remaining survivors who personally knew Father Kapaun to have the
privilege of knowing his acts of courage and valor were officially
honored. I will continue working to ensure this authorization
language gets signed into law, so this great American hero can be
properly honored by a grateful nation. Anyone familiar with the life
of Chaplin Kapaun knows we should not delay in awarding the Medal of
Honor to him.”

Possible Medal of
Honor
In 2000, U.S. Rep. Todd Tiahrt
(R-Kan.) began a campaign to award the Medal of
Honor to Kapaun.[1]
Before leaving office on
September 16, 2009, Secretary
of the Army Pete Geren sent
Tiahrt a letter, agreeing that Kapaun was worthy of the honor.
Admiral Michael
Mullen, chairman
of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, also agrees. Seven chaplains have
been awarded the Medal of Honor. Tiahrt hopes Congress will
approve a bill awarding the Medal of Honor to Kapaun, for signing by
President
Obama.[1]
